Rice Terraces of Banaue

We took a trip to the rice terraces of Banaue - which is a World Heritage site.  It's in the northern part of Luzon - about a 9 hour drive from Manila through winding mountain roads.

The Banaue Hotel is great - the perfect place to stay when visiting the rice terraces.  There's a great gift shop - and the hotel can make arrangements for the various tours.

There is a small village and rice terraces right by the hotel.

The terraces are built in to the side of the mountains - very steep!

The fog coming through the mountains is glorious!

The rice had been recently harvested and in some places new plants were growing.

There are lots of rice gods.

The traditional houses are up off the ground - it helps with flooding. Also, the chickens and other animals could live below the living space.

From the hotel it's a 10 minute walk in to town.

The hotel had a dart board  - so we practiced and had a lot of fun!

Motorized tricycles are a popular way to get around.  I took one in to the main market area of town to get some thread for my local loom.

We took a jeepney to the hiking start point of Batad.

It was a huge hike down the mountain.

Bathrooms along the way!

It is very steep hiking down all the levels of the rice terraces.

Some homes are built on to the side of the mountain.

Our driver, Wilson, made sure we made it there safely!

Coming back in to Banaue after hiking to Batad.
